THE DREAM HAS ME

SAMMI MAK SOLO EXHIBITION

by SWANFALL GALLERY

While dreaming, I am not in control; the dream has me: “Dreams await us in a country we cannot get tickets to” (Cixous, 1993, p. 58).

Wing Sum Sammi Mak (b. 1996) was born and raised in Hong Kong and is currently based in London. She completed her Master's Degree in Fine Arts Painting at the University of the Arts London (Camberwell) and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University. Mak has gained international popularity since her graduation. Her latest solo presentation at Hong Kong Art Central 2023 was featured by the Financial Times, interviewed by China Daily, and featured in other local news articles.

Rooted in the radical beauty of nature and inspired by Anne Carson's writings on desire and longing and Hélène Cixous' articulation of the female body, Mak's artistry manifests painting as a language, capturing and abstracting her experiences and connections with the universe. Mak crafts spaces imbued with openness, fluidity, and unapologetic romance, drawing us into the ethereal stages of painting—abstractions of emotions that stimulate the senses and imagination, a oneness of ecstasy.

The exhibition "The Dream Has Me" will showcase Mak's most recent works. Echoing the sentiments of Hélène Cixous, who believed dreams to be a vital source of inspiration and self-discovery, Mak uses her dreamscapes as a canvas to reflect her innermost thoughts, desires, and fears, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy to create a sense of disorientation and wonder.
