ROYAL FORK

Borrowing its title from the chess manoeuvre in which a single move places two valuable pieces under simultaneous threat, Royal Fork extends strategic logic beyond the board. The unit considers how competing pressures structure choice, where desire, calculation and consequence rarely unfold independently.

Across painting, sculpture, and works that draw on the visual languages of chess, arcade games, and popular culture, play functions less as diversion than as a model of social and psychological negotiation. Rules provide a temporary order, yet that order remains vulnerable to reversal, miscalculation and chance. Humour coexists with mortality; recognisable motifs are displaced into unfamiliar relations; and apparently simple forms become charged with questions of agency, control, risk and exposure.

Rather than arriving at resolution, Royal Fork holds the viewer within a field of contingent positions. Each move reorganises the conditions around it, producing new advantages, new dependencies and new forms of vulnerability. Strategy here is not mastery, but an unstable process of reading, anticipating and responding to forces that remain only partially visible.
